CHAPTER FIVE

As they drove back home in the early hours of the morning, Rania talked excitedly about the evening.

It was not surprising.

First they had enjoyed a dinner of many courses, all delectable.

Then they had gone into the garden and there they had watched many graceful and agile dancers, all dressed in white, springing over the lawn and the flower beds.

Some were lithe gymnastic dancers who were lifted up into the air so high that they seemed almost to touch the stars.

The music was extremely beautiful and when they had finished to rapturous applause, the orchestra continued by playing romantic tunes accompanied by singers hidden behind great banks of flowers.

Everything was pure white and everything seemed to shimmer in the light of the moon rising up in the sky.

“It was certainly something entirely new,” Charles commented as they drove back to Berkeley Square. “And all London will be talking about the party tomorrow.”

He paused and then added,

“And specially about you – ”

“I did nothing spectacular,” sighed Rania.

“But the party was all for you and everyone thought you were as beautiful as the white roses. In the garden you seemed to become part of the moonlight.”

“That is a most romantic thing to say. I only hope I can live up to it.”

“Wait and see – ” murmured Charles.

And as they reached Berkeley Square, he said,

“I know you want to ride with me in Rotten Row, but tomorrow morning as soon as we have eaten breakfast, we must start our round of visits to my relatives, otherwise they will be very annoyed with me for neglecting them.”

“Then of course we must go to them first.”

She started up the stairs and then as Charles did not follow her, she stopped to lean over the banisters, calling,

“Thank you! Thank you so much again, Charles. This evening is something I shall always remember.”

He smiled at her and she waved as she ran further up the stairs.

He thought as he went to his study that the evening had been an even bigger success than he could have hoped.

There was a long list on his writing table that Major Monsell had prepared for him. It was of all his relatives who lived in London and their addresses.

Charles thought with a groan it was going to take a long time to see them all, but he knew it had to be done.

Rania was finding it difficult to sleep because she was still so excited.

She was thinking that the Prince Regent was one of the most charming men she had ever met.

He had paid her a number of effusive compliments when she had said goodbye, but she did not entirely believe them.

She considered it was wonderful of him to take so much trouble over her, but no one could be any kinder or so marvellous as Charles.

She thanked God for him again in her prayers and also included the Prince Regent.

Then she lay wide awake for ages seeing all the dancers, the lanterns and the decorations in the ballroom, and again Charles.
